I am new to all this... but I am curious if anyone knows how to have an alert that I have texts - mine just rings that I have a text and when I unlock the screen it is there... Is there like some sort of icon that can pop up and be there when I unlock my phone? Does this question even make sense? Thanks!

It sounds like you have two questions
- when you receive a new message, you'd like some other alert other than the phone ringing
- you don't want the phone to automatically display the contents of the text message
Some of the adjustments for an application on this phone have to be done in two separate menus.
At the main screen, press the envelope icon to get into the 'Messaging' menu. Press '9' for 'Settings'. Scroll down the 'Settings' menu and you'll see "TXT Auto View" On or Off. The manual says:
"
•TXT Auto View: Choose On to automatically display text messages when they arrive."
To adjust the alert for messages, do this. At the main screen, press the icon of four dots to access the 'Menu'. Press 'Settings & Tools'. Press '4 Sounds Settings'. Press '3 Alert Sounds'. Press either '1 TXT Message' or '2 Multimedia Message' and then you can configure the ringer, vibrate, and reminder for when the phone receives a text message.
