Tried all that.  Took out the battery and put it back in seems to have done the trick.

I did the software update earlier this week and did not lose connectivity to my PCs.

- Windows XP as MTP / synchronize with Napster
- Windows XP as "removable disk"
- Linux Ubuntu 9.10 as a mounted file system

Edit: For some reason, I didn't see that the post about lost connectivity was resolved before I made this post... old age is my best guess.
